not so easy plateau

the outdoor retailer convention was... COLD. and stressful. i thought a free hotel and only 3 days of easy work would be a breeze, but i hardly feel like i took a vacation of any sort. but hey, i paid my rent in cash upon my return.

SO! what did i see in salt lake? i saw one of the most photographed people of all time. no, not the president. not britney. i saw THE NAKED COWBOY modeling exofficio underwear! (GREAT underwear, by the way - i've had a pair for over a year and love them. they still look like new). I was told later that the Naked Cowboy is famous in Times Square. Stands there playing guitar all summer apparently.
I also took some video of "sleeping bags you can walk around in" being modeled by a local hip hop dance troupe, next to the climbing/bouldering wall.

went to a great dinner at "oasis" had some yummy barbecue at "sugar house" and went out for red curry prawns with the local motorcyclists from the "sport touring network" with Fish and one of his coworkers because they're both really into xcountry motorcycle touring. not the goldwing crowd, mind you.
after watching enough tv to last me a few years, it was time to fly out. salt lake is lovely from the air!

i'd arranged to get home in enough time to see my beloved ryan adams play at the paramount in seattle. he surprised me with incredible performances of oasis's wonderwall, alice in chain's down in a hole, plus great versions of let it ride, come pick me up, beautiful sorta, and others. ryan may be sober but he's pretty self-indulgent on stage. the constant talking is cute and he's always funny, and him turning on the house lights for 15 minutes so he could direct the entire crowd to act like zombies and say "cardinal powers, activate" just how he wanted them to say it, all for an idea he had for his youtube channel, was also funny and fun. he also took some video of some girls' eyes while hanging out and talking with folks outside. his youtube channel is pretty funny. he makes the other band members dress up and act stuff out. i think they humor him most of the time. after he taped the audience the drummer said "welcome to life on the bus."

most of the crowd were of the New Seattleite type - 27 year old couples sans kids in the 60K and up income range. a lot of folks in their 40's too. i may have been the only person without a mate there. ryan even noticed this and told the crowd how nice all the couples looked. my only criticism is how near the end of half the songs he'd dramatically replay one word slow and breathy and over and over and OVER again. i think the people around me thought he was being really epic and artistic but i'd start laughing by the 3rd repeat. then it'd be obvious that he was doing it all to amuse himself because he'd start repeating the phrase in a comical way. it just got kinda old by the last song:

i wish i'd taken my iTalk to record wonderwall. it was truly beautiful, and he rarely performs it live i guess.

made lasagna with fish and the kayak twins last night. mmm the shorter ktwin served us BROWNIES WITH ICE CREAM!!! and the tall ktwin served up SOUR PATCH KIDS!!! i love desserts!

nan got back from mexico yesterday with kelly l. and gave me some really pretty turquoise earrings. the straw bale building plans are really coming together. but i think for now she's gonna focus on building their cabin up in index, wa.

Purple for Proof!

Instead of Mexico I am in Salt Lake - every day is BELOW FREEZING!! ah but I love a comfy hotel room, no matter where I am. For a little while, anyway. TELEVISION!!! I haven't watched TV since... crap... I don't know. I saw a show at a friends at least once in the last few months I think. But yeah I'd say I haven't watched as much television in the last 24 hours since I visited Jarad's parents in Houston 2 years ago. CSI, Regarding Henry, Discovery shows about stony asteroids hitting the earth. Commercials about diet pills, new cars, various prescriptions to make you sleep, be happy, get hard, whatever... so they all cause diarrhea and heart arythmia.. who cares! The people look great and it's well edited.

Tomorrow I begin a 3 day job at the Outdoor Retailers Convention at Salt Palace Convention Center. Yesterday I walked into this vast cavern of booths and advertisement - all set up to appeal to the folks who bring you, the consumer, the sea of products that you are convinced you need in order to enjoy "the environment." Never have I seen a more oxymoronic display of eco-consumerism. I have a hard enough time walking into REI or ANY given outdoor retail store, knowing full well that a used wool sweater will do me just fine on a cold watch, and that the most successful hikers in the Grand Canyon wear any hat, light covering clothing and carry little more than a thin plastic gallon jug of water and some peanut butter crackers.

No let's be honest. My heart leapt a little when I saw the giant Filson's display, the Chaco booth, and the Carhaart area. In fact I'm working in between the Petzyl and Teva booths, which may prove for fun breaktimes.

Besides all that, Fish and I went to PF Chang's last night. It was OK. Overhyped, I think. Today we went to Squatters Brewery which was pretty good - bacon bleu cheese burger with sweetpotatoe fries and rootbeer brewed in house. Didn't try the Polygamy Porter. Fish's work gave him a perdiem and there's no fridge in the room so we're going out a lot.

I brought my camera, so I'll take pics tomorrow!

Green for Clean!

So... I'm not going to Mexico. In fact I'm taking a step back in my LETS START A COMMUNITY IN MEXICO! plan. I'm putting some of my enthusiasm for that off for a year. Nan and I had an epic week of miscommunication and working out kinks in our, uh, everything... and I'm totally jumping the gun when you compare her intentions to mine regarding HER property in Mexico. Instead I'm going to focus on getting the magazine out more regularly, saving money, and my new relationship - which is completely awesome. Fish is exactly like me, which can lead to some intensity, but we see ourselves in each other and are more understanding because of it.

So work has been going well. I'm getting even more buff, which is both good and bad. I'm already a bit of an amazon and not really interested in having to deal with more sleeves not fitting. I know i've said it before, but I LOVE my job, and my coworkers. Why did I never take a delivery job before this in my life? I never dread going to work. Granted, by the end of most days, I'm truly ready to go home and tired as hell, but I fit 40 hours into 4 days and the 3 day weekend makes up for it. My coworkers are a lot of fun and my boss is a dream. He's even arranged a weekend getaway for the four of us next month. And he takes us out to a nice lunch, with drinks, about once a month or so. I'm getting paid next week even though I'll be gone, and he's letting me take off another week in March because I'm joining Fish and his family on their Kona vacation. That's another reason I'm not too bummed about missing out on Mexico. I'll get some sun eventually...

Instead, I'm going to... drum roll.... SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH! Yippee!
Haha OK so mormons and another cold climate probably don't sound like my idea of a good time, but hey, making MONEY and maybe going to SUNDANCE FILM FEST do, right? Yesssss.
I'm going to work for Fish's company during the Outdoor Retail Convention, and I have tuesday off so I'll see if I can hit up Sundance.

Hmm what else... well the cooking co-op was a success. The Kayak Twins and I chopped and cooked up a storm (Fish cut up 3 onions - thanks!) for some yummy, super fatty Irish Stew and Bread. We're thinking lasagna next time. Ummm... I bought some furniture, kind of due to the encouragement of my boss, who feels that if I have more "stuff" I might stick around longer. So it was off to Value Village for a super nice folding camp chair, then a not so nice folding camp chair, plus a card table. Added to my 2 small wooden folding chairs, tv tray and baking rack which i use for papers and clothes, and my large room is really deluxe now. OK so I'm still on a mattress on the floor and looking forward to my next voyage where I can get rid of everything again. So it goes.

OK well there's about 2 dozen musicians partying in this house right now so I guess I better go socialize or something. It's not as crazy as it sounds. They're all in their 30's with software jobs and spouses and even kids. They take a few weeks off every year to tour with their bands. I don't play music or work at an office so I don't have too much to discuss with anyone. I hear there's one sailor coming so maybe I'll try to find her now...

Alan wuz here

I think I forgot to mention that one of my favorite shipmates of all time, Alan Kerstetter, was recently in town! Fish, Alan and I went out for a few pitchers in Fremont before he flew east for the holidays.

TEN DAYS!

alright alright yes 10 days since last i blogged. i have accomplished very little in the last 10 days when it comes to getting the new issue printed, updating websites, and shit, even doing laundry. i haven't even mailed my own father his christmas presents and today is new years. i got my gram and aunt b. bags of COFFEE for xmas. sure, it's the best coffee in the universe (STUMPTOWN, REPRESENT!) but still... lame. i'm a selfish bastard in some respects, and in others, i'm generous to an unhealthy level. plus i loathe how this christmas thing manifests itself in respect to consumer frenzy (cliche, i know) and giving gifts to people i'd rather just buy stuff for when i see it other times of the year. also, i'm working at a delivery job where the delivered product is most popular around the holidays, so i now feel like the hardest part of my job is OVER. in fact, i'm going to MEXICO in 3 weeks, and HAWAII in March...yay!! i'm so stoked. i'm desperately hoping i won't get fired over going to hawaii, but the trip is a gift and i'm not going to miss it.

so do you wanna see some pictures from what i've been doing since xmas eve?
first justin and i picked up sone-loc at the airport. after 115 days aboard a container ship between honolulu, guam and shanghai, she'd just flown up here from long beach to spend xmas with me! we all had our xmas eve dinner at my favorite vietnamese restaurant, tamarind tree. here sone is modeling the taste sensation that is the green tea martini. notice the lemongrass martini on the table.

justin wanted to do some cooking belowdecks on the ferry that night, because he says that there's full kitchens and a sort of "iron chef" atmosphere in the bowels of the washington states ferries. for example a call will come from the wheelhouse: "hey do we have any paprika? oh, and FULL ASTERN!" so anyway justin couldn't find a turkey at the asian market next door to Tam Tree so he settled for 3 chickens, each in their own bags, with heads still attached.

we dropped justin off for his overnight shift and then took some xmas gifts up to my sister. the next day sone, Fish and i met up at nans to finish prepping for our Very Ferry Christmas. we brought the joy and happiness of the holidays to Justin, who had to spend them aboard the ferry.
this was our food: spicy lemon crab cakes, mushroom spanokopita, 6 different kinds of cookies, prosciutto/romano/pear paninis, chili with chocolate in it, and fresh organic cranberry-orange pie. all from scratch, all made by nan. amazing. as usual.

sone's loving family in chicago had sent a large box with 2 giant deepdish chicago pizzas, some sausage and a giant new york cheesecake all packed in dry ice. she was only staying for 5 days so we went ahead and gave the cheesecake to the ferry engineers.

here's justin loving up his new ROLEX that sone bought him on the streets of shanghai.

then i had to work the rest of last week.

but THEN... sone and i attended a circus contraption event at the seattle centerhouse on friday night, and later i took her up to capitol hill for a few drinks. the honey hole was kinda boring, but the drinks were great as usual. we walked over to the metropolitain to see if those 25cent pbr's were still happening. there we found FLUFFZ aka the dude i no longer date, rubbing up all over a brunette. that was a bit weird because i'd never seen him with another girl, but since i'm involved with someone special it wasn't upsetting. just weird. in fact, it was quite liberating to see Fluffz In Person and NOT be attracted to him, for once.

sone complimented a cute dyke with a viking seafoods sweatshirt and we could barely shake her the rest of the night.

saturday found us hiking rattlesnake ridge with Fish. it is the highest/longest hike little sone from flat chi-town has ever been on. we brought wine and i wore regular clothes with my cheap rubber boots. it gave me great satisfaction to hike like this in the snow on this SUPER EASY hike while all the nouveau northwesterners sported their rei ensembles, complete with camelbaks, vasque boots, GATORS, and jesus even storebought walking sticks and the removable wire shoegrips. i mean really, people. it's a 2 mile hike with a 900' climb. all switchbacks. hmmph. i hope they were preparing for rainier or everest or sumthin.
i'm really happy that my friends are more about just being themselves and having a good time rather than worrying about their clothes, gear, appearances, etc. Fish and I are both sloppy looking freaks at times. probably mistaken for bums, which is what we both plan to be in the future anyway. boat bums, i mean.

after the hike we attended a party held by the Kayak Twins on their Lake Union houseboat. everything was calm until the bulk of the guests left. then all hell broke loose. i was coerced into joining a Polar Bear Plunge. here this meant jumping naked into a 40 degree freshwater canal between 2 rows of occupied houseboats.
here's the kayak twins themselves getting back on the dock. to the right you will see the hairy back? ass? of skyler, the neighbor who first appeared as we all climbed out in our birthday suits and whom we forced to jump in if he planned on continuing to watch us. so he jumped.

I jumped in twice, but after that first jump i was stone cold sober and couldn't get drunk again the rest of the evening. everyone else drank a lot more and jumped a lot more. Fish jumped 5 times and tried to touch the bottom.

other hilarious events of that evening included a less animated guest named eddie. eddie was one of the KT's driving companions on a cross country trip. one of eddie's most prominent appendages had to be "deflated" during the drive because it was scaring small children in other vehicles. sone decided it was time to bring new life back into eddie's forlorn member. we had lots of fun with eddie.
so ends the xrated part of this post. we woke up at 7am on the kayak twins' floor and realized sone's plane was due to leave in 90 minutes. she hadn't even packed her stuff at my house. sone missed that plane but caught the next one. i caught up on some sleep and then joined the crew at the houseboat with justin once again on new years eve, to watch the space needle pyrotechnical flub at midnight. tomorrow i go back to work and start looking forward to MEXICO!
