Happy Halloween!

Took some shots of Cass and Ms. O'Riley this week. These aren't the ones I'm going to use, but I like these shots for other reasons. Kind of artsy I guess. O'Riley is posing in front of a shelf full of oakum and cotton for filling deck seams, but a friend said immediately that it looked like it was a shelf full of diapers. Another person said they needed to look more made up, which I very much disagree with. Then again, maybe it's for the best that this calendar is Print On Demand because who knows how many will sell!

It's interesting to take sexy photo shoots of women friends... today I helped situate a tank top "just so" over some very large breasts. I felt a bit like I was violating her, even though she was completely comfortable. There's no longer a desire to take nude shots. O'Riley posed for a few topless shots and she's a lovely girl, but it felt really wrong, like I was totally exploiting her. Guess I could never be a porn director. I'm not experienced at this, and the girls look more posed than natural. I've shown them to a few people and I'm not getting much positive feedback. The photos look great to me, but my tastes must be different or less critical when it comes to portrait photography. I think some people see the pictures and mentally compare them to professional works.

Elaine is town! Yay. She makes me laugh a lot.

In My World

Some days, you wake up, and one of these has moved into your front yard.

Lav. looks completely dwarfed!

On Monday I took the water taxi to the fuel dock to load up on diesel. 1400 gallons, to be exact. The tanks hold 2500 overall. Now that I think of it, I don't know what they're going to do with half of that after this Friday...

Thanks to my friend NOAA officer Carl R. for hanging out with me in the wheelhouse AND assisting during the docking and fueling process. Carl works aboard the Oscar Dyson currently, and is the Jack Tar Official Staff Photographer - mainly because he contributes the most photos and keeps interested in helping out with the 'zine. Most of the shots from Alaska are from Carl, and now it's great because instead of spending all of his time in AK, he's permanently off to New England. I need a lot more East Coast participation so I have no doubts that Carl will help with that. His girlfriend is in Iraq and he worries about her, so he's been keeping busy with biking to West Seattle, climbing, and hanging out with friends in Seattle (like myself) that he rarely gets to see.

ELAINE arrives tonight! Yippee! There's a reason she called "Insane" Elaine. I'm shooting Cass for the calendar today... have to pick up a work light and reflector board... Cass shares a living space with her partner Eric aboard a beautiful boat named October, so it should be obvious what month she will represent.

Monday I'm doing some exciting new stuff for JT Mag - going out on a fishing boat! I forget if it's a gilnetter or a purse seiner, but either way, I'm stoked because I've never done it before and I rarely have the chance to cover anything about fishing in the 'zine.

Love at first site!

I've always been attracted to... twin keel boats. Something wonderful about being able to park it right on shore.

And this guy is a true sailor.

Planner? Pshaw.

I've never owned a planner - you know, those pocketbook thingies to help you schedule your life. No, wait. I tried it in high school once and if memory serves, after a week it was never referred to nor used again, except for scratch paper. It's the same story with previous diaries and journals. In fact this blog is the longest running journal I have ever kept. When you loathe writing by hand and suck at it anyway, the keyboard offers sanctuary.

But back to the planner. As it turns out, there are more tasks to schedule now that full-time employment is ending. Photo shoots, maritime classes, brunches, cabin-building, schooner maintenance days/sail days, etc. etc. are coming up and I'm a little worried that I'm going to forget something. For a minute there the calendar project had a "Project Manager" overseeing things and moving things along. Have any of you ever worked with a Project Manager? Let me tell you this, if you are a procrastinator like me, these people are ANGELS. I have a lot of energy to DO stuff, but I'm lacking direction and motivation to start them. Earlier in the year I had felt sure that I needed an interested party to keep me motivated, and now I'm completely confident that this is true. Unless I can recruit Tammy to take on this task, I may have to go take some kind of Project Manager class to get my shit together. For now I will settle for the 100 Ways To Motivate Yourself CD.

Looks like the Diesel Engine Theory class is going to be canceled, due to lack of students. I'm the only person who has paid, even. But then that's $275 back in the bank, and the Able-Bodied Seaman class is looking attractive now.

Carl from NOAA has rustled up four, count-em FOUR traditional sailing crew to help operate LaBoat. If any readers are interested in chartering an 82 year old gaff rig schooner that can take out six paying passengers, or you know of anyone who is, please contact me at jacktarzine(at)gmail(dot)com. I can take the boat out whenever I want, be it Lake Union, Lake WA, locks/sound. And the diesel stove will be operational soon - I guess these stoves provide excellent heat without the diesel smell. I'm pretty sure I'll take her out for some Christmas Ships parades if I can figure out how much power is needed to keep decorative lights on for hours at a time.

One of next month's events is to meet with David Reid; the Puget Sound representative for the Sail Transport Network. Last month I was supposed to meet with the Founder, Jan Lundberg, on Sept 13th in Arcata, but I missed the meeting so we spoke at length on the phone. Jan is close with Charles Moore, who runs the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, studying the South Pacific Gyre. If you click on my vbs.tv link to the right you can find the videos about a Toxic Garbage Island in the middle of the Pacific. That's a great connection, but what Nanette and I are more interested in is the whole idea of cargo and transport via SAIL. Jan has a dock in Trinidad, California, and we figure that since Jay has space in Hilo, plus we're finding that there's people in SE AK, BC, and then of course we're building Casa Tia Marie Sailor's Base Camp and Community Center in Mexico... that's a pretty awesome transport/cargo under sail network already. David is presenting STN ideas to Sustainable Ballard on Monday night. Hopefully I can attend this instead of going to work for a grand 2 hours, solely to pump diesel into the boat I work on. STN publishes the Auto Free Times. This cover is by Erika L. Craft.

Last thing... let's just say that if you have nothing else to do on Halloween... maybe you should ride a certain water taxi back and forth across Elliott Bay for a few hours. There will be music. It is the the water taxi's last day and my last day of employment.

Pumpkin Party!

Last night Tammy, Kelly and I attended a "Pumpkin Massacre" on I dock, hosted by the Windworks instructors and maintenance crew. There was chicken chili, hot buttered rum, the biggest husky dog I've ever seen (White Fang, is that you?), an eight year old working hard with a dremel, and a mix of both expired smoke & rocket flares being used in place of your typical candle inside a pumpkin.

Tammy & Ken have been eyeing Ericson sailboats and one of the hosts had brought his over, so we took a tour. Pretty nice below decks. Lots of cool nooks and crannies in the galley.

We heard some good jokes, before someone pointed out that the 8 year old was still present:

What's the difference between Sarah Palin's mouth and her vagina?
Only ONE retarded thing came out of her vagina.
and

Did you hear about the proposed commemorative vagina postage stamp? They decided against it because only 3% of the male population new how to lick it.

You know me. I try to keep things politically correct here at ITBSL.

Look Out, 2009!

Vertical World

Went climbing tonight with a friend at Vertical World. It's been about 5 years since my last climb in a gym, so I received coaching first on the steps to getting "checked out" to belay. It all came back to me, and much easier now because lines and knots are such a big part of my life these days. Got a little hung up when the intimidatingly gorgeous climbing gym staff guy looked me dead in the eye and asked "but HOW do you KNOW that this figure eight knot is correct???" uh, uh....? I feebly replied "Because I'm a sailor? And I know what a figure eight knot is supposed to look like?" Eventually he gave in and said that sure, he and I both know what a figure eight looks like by sight, but a double figure eight has 10 passes, etc. etc. He OK'd me for belaying and I completed several 5.7 & 5.8 beginner climbs until my forearms begged for mercy. I considered joining the gym for a month, but I think I need yoga more. I need to STretCHH.

Screw Work! (and my job isn't even in an office)

Today I had the most Zen sail one could have in Seattle during late October. Sunny, blowing 20+ kts, whitecaps, I laid on the bow looking up at the jib, holding onto the lee sheet with my hand and pulling it in when it began to luff. Felt the waves moving the boat around... sat up and watched Dall's Porpoise surf the bow wave. Life is good.

Excellent News

Had sloopersize beer last night with my friend Carl. He works for NOAA and is actively trying to recruit me. The money is good, but sheesh, six months for your first tour? Sounds so long. They have several boats in Hawaii, which would be great. And then there's all the other boats that go to Dutch or the Gulf. Ugh.

In other news... I have FOUR days off. And of course it started raining today. No worries - going indoor climbing tonight. Tomorrow... SANDING in the shop. MMM.

Red Headed Stepchild

Rumor has it that Capt. Stephen Taylor has finally acquired my beloved Bill of Rights!!!

I just drove past a grocery bag, a loaf of bread, and a cutting board. In the middle of Elliott Bay. There's got to be a story there.

Friends are coming!

Besides Elaine coming to visit next weekend, the NOAA crew is back for a few days AND... AND.... Sone Loc is coming soon too!! With the help of the fabulous Kayak Twins. Thank god because my nightly internet marathons are getting pretty tiresome. Finally working on the jacktar.org stuff though.

My ex-boyfriend's niece and nephew are coming to my work today. They may very well be the most adorable kids ever to exist. And of course they speak French and dress up in superhero costumes. Wish I had my camera with me today!

I have Mon-Thurs off, which is not so great, but will give me time to prepare for an important board meeting on Wednesday. Maybe do a little sanding too. Sole boards.

cape horn

...

Someone asked about the name of the blog. It's from a Ryan Adams song.

Nov Nov Nov

Working a lot this weekend :(

Does everyone know how much I'm looking forward to November yet?

Think mel gibson getting his guts wrenched out in Braveheart...

FREEEEEEEDOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Stand by for Cannon Fire!

It was a cold, but good day for sailing today. Afterwards I drank some wine with Christy. Insane Elaine called and is coming up in two weeks! Can't wait to hang out with her. She's on her way to Clatsop in Astoria for a Radar Observer class and a Celestial Nav class. That's Elaine showing off her girly anchor tat, on the right. She and Erin were working as gunners for a battle sail off Sausalito in this shot. Cannons = loud (hence erin's earmuffs) & fire/gunpowder spray (hence Elaine's goggles.

My job ends in 2 weeks! Besides more work aboard Lavengro, I'm also looking into possible sailboat delivery work. Great way to get oceans time!

Good Night

Captain Christopher just called and offered me a springtime job aboard a cargo-under-sail boat in the South Pacific! He won't be aboard anymore, but he has already spoken to the owners and they would like to have me join the crew. I'm definitely going to consider it. It's for the end of January, by which time the Seattle weather will have really gotten under my skin.

There's also an invite in my inbox to a Halloween Party at Shilshole - the main event is carving up pumpkins with power tools. Who could say no to that?

alright already

I tried tumblr and there just isn't enough cool stuff over there to tweak my blog. So I'm back to this page, sans archives. Suffice it to say I do not want to be judged for stuff I blabbed on and on about on the blog in the past. It's been a crazy, harrowing summer of disturbing events, utter confusion, lots of work, lots of heartbreak, and still - some great times. I laughed, I cried, I cried some more... and what didn't kill me made me stronger.

It feels like the New Year. Like Obama is already president. I can't wait to do great things.
